Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir

Who was Pontius Pilate and what gave him the notoriety that has endured for thousands of years? In this historical novel, Pablo Zaragoza explores the total man from birth to death. Pontius Pilate was born into an equestrian family, received military training and academic studies at an early age, and grew to become a loyal soldier, fearlessly going into battle and courageously contributing to the expanse of the Roman Empire.

Pilate’s roots ran deep in the Italian countryside, and as he aged, he yearned more and more for home and family, for vineyards and barley fields, and for the laughter of children. His beloved wife Claudia had a gift of discernment, an ability to forecast events and outcomes. When Pilate became governor of Judea, a loathsome assignment to him, he took Claudia with him. What transpired from then on was life-changing for both of them.

Pontius Pilate was the unwilling participant in the crucifixion of Jesus, so regretful of his act that he washed his hands over and over again. As American playwright Arthur Miller once said, “Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets.”

Five Star Review by ML Gemmill

I’m glad I read Pablo Zaragoza’s intriguing historical fiction, Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir. It took me from Pontius’s birth through his battles for Rome, his rise as governor of Judea, and to this eventual meeting with Christ and his surprising and unforeseen ministry. The novel is good. Surprisingly good. Steeped in research (battles, ceremonies, life of the times), it crackles to life.

Pontius’s birth and early training prepared him for a life of duty and service to Rome. The world knows Pontius as a fearless general following Tiberius’s orders. But his anchor is his family.

While Rome lies steeped in depravity and debauchery, Pontius builds a family that thrives outside the corrupt system. He successfully creates an oasis. A generational legacy: horse breeding, farming, orchards, and vineyards.

Pablo deftly navigates both family and political worlds, but most captivating is the family Pontius leads. Equally absorbing are his family members. The characters in his story (though impossible to know if they truly existed) were common for a man of his stature. And every character that Pablo gives us is fresh and three-dimensional, bringing all to life.

Most memorable is Pontius’s marriage to Claudia, a seer. She uses her gift wisely to steer Pontius through the labyrinth of politics, future events, their growing clan, blood-soaked battles, and, lastly, to receive the Savior of the world. We soon realize if not for Claudia, there would be no Pontius. She is his moral compass, helping him to succeed in moving up the ranks to general, all climaxing with his final move to Judea, where fate and history collide.

Pablo Zaragoza’s memoir stands compelling and moving. He does not shy away from the gruesome battles that Rome required. He does not shy away from the depravity or carnality of war and Rome. Pablo uses both to give us deeper insight into Pontius’s worldview, and we love him for it. History has taught us that Pontius is barreling toward destiny and his ultimate encounter with Christ. Pablo reveals an outcome wholly unforeseeable. I found myself crying at the end.

Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir is for adults who enjoy historical fiction. The hook is good and does what a book should do – to draw the reader in and keep him or her there. The varied and believable characters all play clearly defined parts and have interesting interactions that help to hold the story together. There’s no guessing who is who and how they fit into the story. The personality of each character has been captured quite well so that readers can care about them and invest in them emotionally. There are many antagonists throughout the story, keeping it interesting. An adequate number of subplots are all well written. The many conflicts are well established. There is a good balance between narrative and dialogue. The ending to this story is very satisfying and magical.

Five- Star Review by S. A. Restum

A very rare and powerful book, raised completely above the ordinary by its candor, research, and intelligence, a historical reorientation which should permanently affect our views of the events encompassing Pontius Pilate and the avalanche of misconceptions shrouding his legacy.

Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir by Pablo Zaragoza is an evocative story about Pilate and his life. In this intense, often graphic, yet gripping account, the author tells the story of a young Pontius Pilate and his family. A raw new retelling of a true story, Zaragoza presents Pontius Pilate to readers in an enlightening way. Set in Italy in Roman times, the book is based on broad research of the times and is epic in its tone, with the appearance of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Junius Brutus Albinus – one of Caesar’s assassins.

With liberal references and battle scenes, the book is a historical tale and biblically based. For instance, Claudia, Pilate’s Jewish wife is woven into the memoir, and her baptism was performed by John the Baptist. Jesus himself is introduced in the latter chapters of Zaragoza’s tome, as the scene shifts to the holy city of Jerusalem. Pilate ordered the crucifixion of Jesus and remained notorious for this, yet this book shows a very different perspective of the man, the myth, and the legend.

Personalizing the period’s characters was very effective. Pablo Zaragoza lifts the veil and the reader can get a glimpse behind the scenes of history’s famed figures. Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir is gritty, fast-paced, and often emotional. Christians, like this reviewer, will enjoy it. Depending on your beliefs, you will as well. Reading this work by Zaragoza will leave you with plenty to ponder.

Great Battle Scenes

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would like Pontius Pilate: An Unexpected Memoir. Yes, I knew of the historical figure, Pontius Pilate, and what he did to earn a tag of notoriety. But I did not know much about his birth into an equestrian class or his leadership role on the battlefield for the Roman Empire. Author Pablo Zaragoza knows how to make history come to life, even if it means taking creative license to do so. The battle scenes and conquests by land and sea – gripping, gut-wrenching, and realistic – held my attention. It’s hard to imagine trekking from Rome to Germany in a military maneuver back in his day. Pilate was definitely a force to be reckoned with, and his military might together with his softer side made this a most enjoyable read.
